I arrived at Starbucks a few minutes early. I was nervous. The coveted comfy chairs were open so I grabbed them and texted Shane, “I’ll be the one in the comfy chairs.” Not that he wouldn’t know who I was…it was on Facebook that we started talking, introduced by a mutual friend at Shane’s request. But this was our first date, the first time we would officially meet. Then he walked up, looking all attractive in his blue and green button up shirt, True Religion jeans and black Converse sneakers. We said hello and he got in the long line to order his venti green tea lemonade, light ice, and low-fat fruit bar. As I sat and waited, I texted my sister Whitney something along the lines of “he’s even better looking than I remember!” Shane and I had seen each other around over the years, but now this was different. I was no longer a young teenage girl with this crush on an older guy. We had both come to a place where the timing was aligned and our story was about to unfold.
And so began our first date that would eventually have to be cut off at 4 and a half hours long. We talked of anything and everything and realized so many similarities, some of which I had in common with few others. Business and marketing and ideal clients and list making and making a list for things that needed a list made. He asked me if I liked The Office. The fact that I loved it was a strong indicator that I had a great sense of humour, according to Shane. We talked of his bucket list, my 101 list, of photography and church and the absence of his father growing up.
I think we both drove away from the date with smiles on our faces. Something was happening, life was changing and we would never look back. Shane said it was then that he knew. He knew he’d found the one. And I thank God every day that Shane was right.
Happy one year, my love xox
