As Shane and I lay in bed the other night, he asked me what my favourite part of this Christmas was. Was it the gifts? he joked. No! I replied…though I really do love my new Cowboys jersey from him. It was hard to pin point just one thing that made this Christmas extra special. We had our traditions – Christmas Eve service at church, dinner at Grandma and Grandpa’s with a house full of family, and the getting of Starbucks on Christmas morning. We had our new traditions – like Christmas Eve morning crepes, just me and Shane at home. Then we had the power outage on Christmas Day. Dad had read the Christmas Story, we had finished our stockings and were just about to open our gifts when the wind became so fierce that we were left in the dark. No twinkling lights in the tree or on the mantle. So we became resourceful – battery operated tea lights left over from our wedding were stuck in the tree, extra candles were lit, somebody dug out the camping lantern, and we played Christmas music on my iPhone. And that’s how it was for the next few hours. We had planned for a simpler Christmas this year and we got it :) We napped, Christmas dinner was bumped til Boxing Day, and we still enjoyed our time immensely. Like when we Skyped with my sister and her boyfriend in Mexico. She decided to spend Christmas with him and his family this year and while she was missed, it was so good to see her and Manolo together again – so good, that we all sang them a roaring rendition of Feliz Navidad, with maracas and all. I laughed so hard, totally embarrassed for us, but that moment definitely rivalled for favourite part of this Christmas.
So as I lay there in bed, deliriously sleepy from all the celebrating, I decided that any fits of laughter – the kind where your face goes scrunched, your abs ache and your body practically convulses, the kind that happens a lot when my family gets together – made up my favourite part of this Christmas.
