This month marks two years of our book club. It marks many books read, bottles of wine consumed, desserts enjoyed, and friendships grown. One of us recently stumbled across a fantastic article on a book club that has been meeting for the last 50 years! Reading it, we felt connected to it and funny enough, they meet on the same day we meet each month, the third Tuesday. They’re aptly named The Third Tuesday Book Club, and so we’ve kinda sorted adopted the same name. Their 50 years marks 600 books read, five dead husbands, 39 kids, two member deaths and one divorce. Fortunately for us, we haven’t had nearly that kind of loss! But we have had five babies (+one on the way), one adoption, three new members, an engagement, a wedding, one adopt-a-family at Christmas, and have read 20+ books. Well, some of us have read that many… ;) My Top Ten (in somewhat of an order): The Book Thief Rules of Civility To Kill A Mockingbird The Paris Wife A Tree Grows in Brooklyn (in progress, but I already know it’s a favourite) The Great Gatsby Little Bee The Island Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close The Forgotten Garden This is where last week’s book club took place. Last summer began the tradition of visiting “the lake house” for one of our monthly meetings, Alanna’s family’s second home on Harrison Lake. This place is stunning. Such a fancy treat to spend an evening eating, lounging and taking in the gorgeous scenery while discussing the book and life. Thank you, Alanna & family! We came having read The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. It was my second time through and I loved it all the more. Perhaps it had something to do with having just watched the movie, or perhaps I was able to take in more of the fine detail and description throughout the story. Like one of the girls said, there is something about literature from that time period. It’s in the language used and care the author took to craft the characters and the way in which the story unfolds. It’s a lovely, fairly quick read. All of us but two dearly missed members, Agata and Summer. Until next month, ladies! And here’s to another 48 years ;) xo
