Back before a disappointing Canucks loss in the Stanley Cup final, back before the embarrassing, even more disappointing rioting in the streets of Vancouver, there was a happier (more hopeful) time. Yesterday afternoon marked the first meeting of our book club! My good friend Andrea had the wonderful idea and so five of us came together over treats and tea to talk about our first read: The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton. I had no idea I could read a book so big in such a short amount of time! But I found I could justify making time to read with the motivation of an upcoming meeting and the more I read, the more I wanted to read. The book was enthralling, as it covered more than a hundred years and spanned two continents, jumping back and forth between characters, trying to unveil secrets of a past. You find yourself putting together pieces of the puzzle and, as is usually the case with a good book, when all is finished it’s sad to reach the end. But in this case we had the meeting to look forward to, which, we concluded, really was just an excuse to get together and eat and catch up. Because the book takes place in Australia and England, we ate accordingly. There was a spread of crumpets and scones with devonshire cream, lemon curd, and jam, fresh strawberries and tea and Tim Tams. Such fancy deliciousness should be eaten more often! Now for a name for our club…did you ever see the episode of The Office with ‘The Finer Things Club’? Something like that. Hopefully we’ll have thought of something before next month’s meeting…for which I think we should dress accordingly as well! What do you think, ladies?
